Special Forces Challenge 9th September 2017 – Have you got what it takes?


Ever wondered what it takes to be one of Britain’s Special Forces? Find out for yourself as we cover the same route taken by SAS soldiers as part of their selection and training. We’ll be travelling over some difficult and challenging terrain and climbing Pen-y-Fan Mountain – the highest in the Brecon Beacons – twice! It’s going to be tough but with some training, we’ll all get through together. You’ll work in teams as you tackle the 24km (15 miles) trying to hit your target time. Everyone is welcome and it’s Free! Booking essential!

Detailed Instructions for Participants:

Meeting Point for Car Sharing:

Twickenham: Entrance to Kneller Gardens TW2 6PH

Surbiton: Alexandra Drive KT5 9AA

Meeting Point in Brecon: Pont ar Daf Car Park on the A470. Postcode LD3 8NL (about 500m before the Storey Arms Outdoor Centre). Parking is free. We’ll car share to get there and back.

Timings: Saturday 9th September

07:30 – Meet at Car Sharing Locations in Twickenham and Surbiton.

11:30 – Meet at Pont ar Daf Car Park. Journey time approx 3 hours 30 minutes.

12:00 – Challenge begins. The route will take between 4 to 6 hours.

17:00 – Return to cars and depart for home or campsite. 

Kit List:

Long trousers are suggested. Sturdy footwear – light hiking boots preferred or tough trail running shoes with good grip (road running/gym trainers are not suitable). Sports top, light fleece, heavier fleece, waterproof jacket, light gloves, hat. Sunglasses. Clothing to change into for the journey home/campsite. Not less than 2 litres of water. Snacks, energy bars, energy gels (these make a huge difference and you should be taking one every 30 minutes or so). Small First Aid Kit. Emergency space blanket. Bug spray. Fully charged mobile phone. Money in case of emergency. Emergency whistle. Small rucksack for the above.

Kit List if Camping:

All of the above plus tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, cooking kit and food. Toiletries including loo roll. Towel. Flip flops (for the shower). Torch. Pillow. Bug spray.

Campsite details:

Some people are planning to camp on Saturday night at the Youth Hostel Association Campsite, Reservoir Cottages, Talybont-on-Usk LD3 7YS. The cost per person is approx £20 which includes breakfast, showers etc. You MUST LET ME KNOW ASAP if you wish to camp so I can reserve your place. Email felix@lemonbody.com. We are planning to go to the campsite after the Challenge, get showered and then go into town to get a bite to eat before returning and staying until Sunday morning. After breakfast we’ll depart around 10:00. ETA back home is 14:00.
