What’s your BootCamp FitScore?

What’s your BootCamp FitScore?

Want to know how Fit you REALLY are?

Then come to BootCamp and check your FitScore! Or do the tests yourself and add up your scores!

You’ll need to place two markers exactly 20m apart on flat, even ground – and you’ll need a watch.

Test 1. Shuttles

Run from one marker to the next and back as many times as possible in 5 minutes. Count each shuttle (up and back) and multiply by 4 to get your score. For example, if you ran up and back 25 times, your score is 100.

Test 2. Press Ups

Complete as many Press Ups as possible in 60 seconds. You must complete each one correctly, lowering to 90 degrees at the elbow. The test is scored for females to complete on knees; men to complete on toes. Score one point for each correct Push Up. For example, if you can complete 50 good Press Ups in 60 seconds, your score is 50 points.

Test 3. Sit Ups

Complete as many Sit Ups as possible in 60 seconds. You must complete each one correctly and you’ll need a partner to hold your feet. Lie on your back and place your feet flat on the ground, close to your butt. Now place your fingertips just behind your ears and bring our elbows forward, pointing at your thighs. Now sit up until your elbows touch your thighs, lowering again until your shoulder blades touch the ground, and repeat. Score one point for each correct Sit Up. For example, if you can complete 50 good Sit Ups in 60 seconds, your score is 50 points.

Add it all up!

Now add your scores together to get your total and compare with the scores below:

Score 100 = A good start, but you can do better with our help.

Score 150 = You’re averagely fit, well done.

Score 200 = You’re fitter than 90% of people out there.

Score 250 = You’re not human, you’re a superhero!

You can do these tests on your own, or you can come to BootCamp and we’ll run them for you! See you at a Workout soon!

The Benefits of Outdoor Exercise

The Benefits of Outdoor Exercise

All the goodness of outdoor exercise. . .

We know that exercise in general is great for us, but is there any difference between training indoors vs outdoors? Science says there is. So let’s take a look at all the amazing benefits that come with taking your workout to the great outdoors. . .

ONE – You burn more calories. That’s right, just by taking your session outdoors you will burn more calories than if you did an identical session inside. The main reasons being that wind resistance begins to affect all of your movements when you’re outdoors, which builds up over a session and the changing terrain and uneven ground force you to work harder as you move across it.

TWO – You reduce stress. Various scientific studies have proven a connection with spending time outdoors and a reduction in a persons stress levels. Fresh air and increased oxygen consumption cause your body to produce more Serotonin which is a chemical that makes you feel good, meaning your stress goes down and your happiness goes up. Win win.

THREE – Sunshine  . When our skin is exposed to sunlight we produce Vitamin D3. This is so important as Vitamin D3 is important for bone health, metabolic function and our mood. Exposure to sunlight has also been proven to help us sleep better at night, improve our immune system and increase endorphin production.

FOUR – You’ll feel better. A study carried out by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry analysed studies of more than 800 adults and found that outdoor exercise was associated with greater energy levels and revitalisation, as well as a decrease in anger, confusion, depression and tension. Not bad.

FIVE – For most people, Outdoor Group Exercise is more fun, more motivating and more effective than training alone. People work harder and stay exercising for longer when other people are there sharing the activity with them.

At 1000 Calorie BootCamp we give you the best of both worlds. A mix of Indoor and Outdoor in the Winter, and  Outdoors  during the glorious summer weather.

What are you waiting for? Get along to BootCamp and discover the FUN and EASY way to get in shape!

Resistance Training – What and Why?

Resistance Training – What and Why?

Resistance Training is the Boss!

When it comes to getting fit and healthy, it’s the Boss – and unlike so much else out there, it’s most definitely NOT a fad!

At LemonBody, we’ve been doing Resistance training from the very first BootCamp (nearly seven years ago!). Other sections of the Fitness Industry have been slower to catch on and for many years Jogging was held above all else as the key to Weight Loss. It’s NOT! (See my article on HIIT).

Resistance Training simply involves working your muscles against a resistance. This can be anything, but it needs to be difficult to be effective. At BootCamp, we use Power Bags, Resistance Bands, Body Weight, Tractor Tyres, other People and just about anything else we can think of to work your muscles, HARD!

Here’s why: Modern lives and labour saving gadgets mean our muscles are under used most of the time. So we lose them. We become weaker, less toned, less able, more prone to injury and we begin storing more Body Fat. Bummer..

Next week, I’ll explain why your body does this, but for now just remember that you’ll be losing muscle and strength every day after your 25th birthday unless you do something about it. And the older you get, the worse it gets – just look around at most 40 somethings next time you’re at the beach…

The good news is that you can keep your muscles strong and healthy (and look more toned and yummy) by including lots of Resistance Training into your Workout regime – just like we do at BootCamp! And it starts to work almost straight away – within 3 weeks, it can make you 30% stronger! Really! And it’s for boys and girls! Forget about “bulking up” ladies – most guys can’t even do it so you won’t!

Many of you will be familiar with that “burn” feeling in your muscles when you work them hard (you’ll certainly feel it during your BootCamp Workout). You should seek  the “burn” and learn to embrace it because the burn tells your muscles to get stronger!

A lot of people say they aren’t interested in getting stronger; they just want to lose weight, get toned and look better. Want to know a secret? Resistance Training is THE KEY to all of these things! Strong muscles help you burn Fat. Strong muscles will make you toned and look better too. And here’s another thing: Resistance Training burns LOADS of Calories – even when you’re NOT Training! How the heck does it do that? You’ll have to wait until next week’s article to find out! Get along to BootCamp and feel the “burn”!

Resistance Training Benefits:

Reduce Injury

Burn Fat

Raise Metabolism

Metabolise Fat and Sugar in your bloodsteam more efficiently

What is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)?

What is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)?

HIIT The Magic Button!

The fitness industry thrives on the fact that we’re all looking for the “magic button” to get into shape. The truth is, there is no magic button – but there is something that works and works really well too!

It’s called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and it’s very simple: You workout like crazy for a short interval of 20-30 seconds, then you rest for a short interval of 20-30 seconds and repeat, repeat, repeat!

The Hill Sprints that LemonBody does at Running Club are a great example of a HIIT Workout (check the EVENTS page to find the next Hill Sprints Session) but HIIT can be applied to almost any type of exercise.

The science of HIIT is really simple too: When you work really hard (to the max!) for a short period, your body gets a cascade of benefits and when you recover for a short period, it enables you to go all out for the next interval.

By working in this way – 30 seconds work, 30 seconds rest you can pack a huge amount of maximum effort into a short time and still get amazing results. In less than an hour of intervals recently, I burned 1250 Calories!

You’ll find a lot of HIIT type exercises in our 1000 Calorie BootCamp Workouts precisely because they work so well!

Here is an example HIIT Workout that can be done in your sitting room (make sure you warm up first!):

Remember, work to the max, then rest. Rest 60 seconds between exercises.

Exercise 1: Star Jumps 20 secs on, 30 secs rest. Repeat 5 times

Exercise 2: Squat Jumps 20 secs on, 30 secs rest. Repeat 5 times

Exercise 3: Mountain Climbers 30 secs on, 30 secs rest. Repeat 5 times

Exercise 4: Burpees 30 secs on, 30 secs rest. Repeat 5 times

Exercise 5: High Knees (running on the spot) 30 secs on, 30 secs rest. Repeat 5 times

Total time: 27 Minutes

Calories burned = 500 (dependent on effort and individual)

Benefits of HIIT:

You Burn lots of Body Fat

You Increase your Metabolism

You Build Power and Strength

You Tone Muscle

You Increase Stamina

You Increase Lung Capacity and Cardiovascular Health (you get fitter!)

You Lower Blood Pressure

You Lower the risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

You Improve Alertness and Mental Health

You’ll find it Quick and Simple

You don’t need much Kit or much space!

Downside of HIIT

It’s flipping tough if you do it correctly..!
